Steps to take in order to set-up your Google My Business listing

Registering Your Free Listing

To start, you will need a Google account or access your 'Google My Business' login, if you have one.

  1. Head to business.google.com/create and click ‘Manage Now’,
  2. Enter your business name,
  3. Enter the address of the business location. If you don’t have any premises where customers can visit you, leave the address field blank, tick the box and then tick the ‘Hide my address (it’s not a store)’ box that appears below.
  4. Specify service areas (Service Area Businesses only),
  5. Choose your business category,
  6. Add a contact phone number and website URL,
  7. Complete your Google My Business Verification (Postcard verification, Phone verification, Email verification - If shown as a option)

Once verified, it’s time to optimise your Google My Business page and get climbing those rankings.

Claiming A Listing

If you find a verified Google Business Page for your business and you do not have access to the Google Business Listing or you may have lost the login details, then you need to request ownership of the current verified Google business page.

Do Not: Attempt to create another business listing, this will results in a duplicate page that will more then likely get suspended.

You Must: Make the ownership request before you can appeal or contact business support.

  1. Go To: business.google.com/create
  2. Start: Typing in the Businesses Name
  3. Search for business name
  4. Select the correct business
  5. You’ll see a message saying someone else owns this business
  6. Click: Request Access
  7. Submit

If the owner rejects the request, you will receive an email informing you.

We all know the power of Google to generate leads, but Google My Business (GMB, formerly Google Local and Google Places) is an important part of your local SEO strategy and GMB Profiles are only going to get more sophisticated.

Many local businesses claim their GMB listing and then forget about it. But Google My Business, if optimised, will increase leads into your business.

To rank above your competitors and get into the 3-pack, here are some areas to concentrate on.

Complete Listing

Complete all areas within your Google My Business profile. When done, your listing will have valuable basic data that will make it easier for potential customers to find more information about your company.

Create Posts

Google Posts are almost like “mini-ads” or “social media posts” that show up in Google search in your Google My Business listing. Create about one post a week.

Booking button

If you have any type of business that relies on customers making appointments (and you’re using integrated scheduling software), people can book an appointment with your business directly from your Google My Business listing.

Messaging

Did you know that you customers/potential customers can send you text messages? This is a great way to connect directly with people interested in what you have to offer, and a great way to engage with people looking at your GMB listing

Q & A

Be proactive and create a Frequently Asked Questions list to preempt people’s GMB Q&As. Check with your team and your customer service staff to identify the questions people most often ask, then put those Q&A questions on your GMB listing.

Reviews

Online reviews appear next to your listing in Google Maps and your business’ knowledge panel in search results. Online reviews are known to impact search result rankings, consumer trust, and click-through rates.

Photos and videos

Adding photos of your business is a great way to humanize your brand and let your customers get a “behind-the-scenes” look at what your company is all about. Tip: Add GEO information to the images.

Citations

A local citation is any mention of your business on the web; it is any combination of your company name, address and phone number (NAP) and is very important to keep consistant.

Schema

Schema tells the search engines what your data means. The schema is crawled and return the results in a different manner than if they had just been added to the website page through a plugin.

The Results We Have Seen With Our Clients

We made a number of improvements to our clients GMB listing over the course of one month
(Note: We tracked the results by implementing a telephone tracking software allowing us to compare these results to other campaigns).  The increase in telephone calls amazed our clients who originally thought that most of their telephone calls were a result of their website.

As shown in the image, our clients Google My Business listing generated 65.4% of all the inbound calls (results depend on industry, listing quality and competition quality).
